Edgerton, Cuba City earn state golf titles

It's not often two local teams win state team golf titles in the same season, but that's what happened at University Ridge Golf Course on Tuesday as Edgerton and Cuba City squads took home state team championships.

In Division 2, Edgerton junior Erik Danielson finished fifth individually. He shot an 81 on the day.

Another junior, Andrew Morrison finished third individually by shooting 77. Morrison finished with one birdie in the round.

"It's a team effort, and everyone has to come through at some point," said PGA star and Edgerton native Steve Stricker, who watched Tuesday's action. "It's pretty special, and it's pretty cool for the town."

In Division 3, the Cubans had a 15-shot lead at the start of the day and won by 27 shots.

Alex Stewart and Dakota Thole finished tied for fourth individually with nine over par totals of 160.

Nate Murray, Drew Zimmerman also helped Cuba City to the Division 3 state championship.

"You know I think we have been the best team in Division 3 all year and we had a rough patch a regionals and sectionals, but the past few days we just were the best," said coach Jim Blaine.

"Hopefully Cuba City golf is a little more popular," said Stewart. "We had made it to state only once until three years ago, so now we have three in a row. Hopefully we are making a name for ourselves."

Osseo-Fairchild finished a distant second. Lancaster finished fourth.
