Pregnant teen wins battle to keep her baby

A pregnant teen who sued her parents, claiming they were coercing her to have an abortion, will be able to give birth to her baby.

Attorneys representing the 16-year-old girl were granted a long-term injunction against the girl's parents in Texas family court on Monday, according to court documents.

The teen is 10 weeks pregnant and the injunction will last for the duration of her pregnancy.

As part of the order, the girl will be able to use her car to go to school, work and medical appointments. Her parents had taken away the use of the car as part of their effort to force an abortion, court papers stated.

The teen's parents will be liable for half of the hospital bill when she gives birth, unless she is married to the baby's 16-year-old father.

"We are extremely happy with the judge's decision today and we are very proud of our teenage client for being strong enough to stand against her parents to save her unborn child's life," Greg Terra, president of the Texas Center for Defense of Life, said in a blog post on the group's website.

Attorneys filed a lawsuit on the teen's behalf earlier this month arguing that her parents "are violating her federal constitutional rights to carry her child to term by coercing her to have an abortion with both verbal and physical threats and harassment."

The teen, identified in the lawsuit only as R.E.K. since she is a minor, was "beside herself" when she called the center for help, her lawyer Stephen Casey told ABCNews.com last week. The group claims it has previously represented teens in similar situations and won their cases.

"These girls are in a bind, particularly in a situation where their parents are forcing them to do something they don't want to do," Casey said. "Regardless of the [situation], that's her parents and she should expect support from them in this situation, not resentment and anger."

When the pregnancy was confirmed, the teenager's father allegedly "became extremely angry, was insistent that R.E.K. was not having the baby, and that the decision was not up to her, according to the lawsuit. He stated he was going to take her to have an abortion and that the decision was his, end of story."

The teen claimed in the lawsuit that her parents had taken away her phone, pulled her out of school, forced her to get two jobs and took away her car in an effort to "make her miserable so that she would give in to the coercion and have the abortion."'

Police: Shot reported at Pa. campus was newspaper

(AP) ? Police in Pennsylvania say a student's report of a gunshot being fired was instead the sound of a newspaper hitting the sidewalk.

Gettysburg police Chief Joseph Dougherty says a Gettysburg College student had reported that someone in a white sedan fired a shot early Saturday morning. But Dougherty says police investigated and determined the sound came from a newspaper delivery driver throwing a paper from her vehicle.

After the report, the college alerted students and employees via text messages, voicemails and emails. A college spokeswoman says an all-clear message was sent around 8:30 a.m.

(AP) ? Oscar Pistorius has received "overwhelming support" from his fans, his agent said Sunday, as he remained in custody in a South African police station charged with the shooting murder of his model girlfriend.

Peet van Zyl said outside the Brooklyn police station soon after visiting Pistorius that "a lot of fans" had sent their good wishes. Van Zyl said the support was "really on a global scale. South African fans, international fans from literally all over the world."

Van Zyl said he visited Pistorius primarily to discuss his running career and would not respond to a question about the mental and emotional state of the 26-year-old athlete.

Pistorius broke down and wept at his first court appearance on Friday after he was charged with the murder of model and reality TV show contestant Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot multiple times in his house in the early hours of Thursday.

"I am not going to comment on anything except that (what) is related to his athletics career at this point in time," Van Zyl told reporters outside the police station in the South African capital, Pretoria.

Van Zyl called Steenkamp's killing tragic and said he visited Pistorius as a friend as well as an agent.

"Obviously from a management side and also as a friend, it's a tragic circumstance," Van Zyl said, "and we can only give Oscar our support at this point in time."

The main point of the visit was to update the multiple Paralympic champion and Olympic athlete on his crumbling track career and the situation with his sponsors, which were now expected to step back from their association with the world's most famous disabled athlete.

Van Zyl would release a statement either later Sunday or on Monday, he said, with exact details of the races and sponsorship deals that were now affected by Pistorius' arrest and murder charge.

He told The Associated Press on Saturday that he had begun canceling races for Pistorius scheduled for 2013, including Diamond League appearances and exhibition runs against fellow Paralympic champions Alan Oliveria of Brazil and Jonnie Peacock of Britain.

Sunday was likely the first time that Pistorius was told about the cancelations.

"The nature of my visit was on a professional manner to discuss his career and the plans that we had made for this year with the IAAF (world) championships in Moscow as the main goal for this year," Van Zyl said. "We obviously just discussed the races and the contracts that had been signed and secured for this year and also to keep him up to date with regard to the sponsors."

Sportswear giant Nike and eyewear manufacturer Oakley are among Pistorius' big-name sponsors.

GOP: Leaked WH immigration plan ?counterproductive?

Posted on February 18th, 2013 in News and Commentary

CBS NEWS:? ?A draft of a comprehensive White House immigration proposal was obtained yesterday by USA Today, and one key Republican senator immediately deemed the president?s plan ?dead on arrival.?

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a Hispanic lawmaker involved with a bipartisan group of senators crafting a compromise proposal, said it was a ?mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress,? calling the proposal ?half baked and seriously flawed,? and declaring, ?If actually proposed, the president?s bill would be dead on arrival in Congress.?

White House sources tell CBS News Senior White House Correspondent Bill Plante that this was not a planned leak. The sources add that the big concern is that the leak makes it appear that they are trying to get ahead of the Senate negotiations. They say that?s not the case ? the Senate process is going well and the White House is very much focused on supporting it?? (more)

Masked intruders raid Greek gold mining company

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) ? About 40 masked attackers raided the facilities of a prospective gold mine in northern Greece overnight Sunday, setting machinery and offices alight, authorities said.

There has long been vehement opposition to the prospect of a gold mine and processing plant being built at Skouries in the Halkidiki peninsula, with residents objecting to what they say will be the destruction of the environment and of pristine forest in the area, leading to the loss of tourism and other local activities such as farming, the rearing of livestock and fishing.

The mining company, Hellas Gold, is 95 percent owned by Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold Inc. The Greek government has been eager for the foreign investment as it struggles through a deep financial crisis. But the dispute has led to frequent protests in the area, with tear gas and firebombs used and residents trading accusations with the company about heavy-handed reactions and the use of violence.

In Sunday's attack, firefighters and police said the intruders raided the facility after midnight, using gasoline bombs and flammable liquid to set alight machinery, vehicles and containers used as offices, causing extensive damage.

Police detained 27 people for questioning in a local police station early Sunday morning, they said. No arrests were immediately made. Authorities said one security guard employed by the company to guard the facilities sought treatment at a hospital after being kicked.

The Skouries project is the latest in a complex of mining facilities in the area. Hellas Gold ? 95 percent owned by Eldorado Gold and the remaining 5 percent by Greek construction company Aktor ? holds mining licenses for an area covering 317 square kilometers (122 square miles) with proven and probable reserves of lead, zinc, silver, gold and copper.

Many see the foreign investment as vital to helping Greece emerge from what is essentially a depression, with a quarter of the workforce unemployed and the economy heading into a sixth year of recession.

Opponents also argue that unlike many other countries, the Greek state gets no royalties from mine concessions, so stands to gain only taxes and jobs. Concessions granted in 2004 for Stratoni, one of the Halkidiki mines that is currently operating and is near Skouries, are valid until 2026 and can be renewed twice for 25 years each time, free of charge.

Opponents say the new mine, which will consist of an open pit followed by tunnels beneath, and the subsequent processing plant, will destroy the forest and contaminate groundwater. The company rejects these claims, saying it will refill and replant the open pit once the ore has been extracted, and that all necessary care is being taken not to pollute the environment.

Eldorado Gold did not immediately respond to requests for comment or details about Sunday's raid.

Chinese Herbal Medicine May Prevent And Treat Alzheimer's

Administration of the active compound tetrahydroxystilbene glucoside (TSG) derived from the herb Polygonum multiflorum Thunb, reversed both overexpression of a-synuclein, a small protein found in the brain, and its accumulation using a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

These results may shed light on the neuropathology of AD and open up new avenues of treatment.

Aberrant accumulation of a-synuclein can form insoluble aggregates that have been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Researchers have now found that overexpression of a-synuclein increases with age and have demonstrated that a-synuclein aggregates in the hippocampus of older mice compared to normal controls.

"Our results raise the possibility that TSG might be a novel compound for the treatment of AD and dementia with Lewy body," co-lead investigator Lan Zhang, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Key Laboratory for Neurodegenerative Diseases of Ministry of Education, Department of Pharmacology of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University in Beijing said.

The study used an animal model of AD: APPV717I transgenic (Tg) mice with the London mutation.

In previous work, the authors showed that these mice show cognitive impairments beginning at 4 months of age and develop amyloid plaques in the brain that are evident by 10 months.

In one series of experiments, 4 month old Tg mice were divided into 3 groups and received daily intragastric administration of distilled water (controls), low dose TSG (120 umol/kg/d), or high dose TSG (240 umol/kg/d). A fourth group consisted of age-matched non-Tg controls. The mice were treated until 10 months of age.

In a second series of experiments, 10-month-old mice were divided into similar control and TSG-treated groups and were treated for 6 months.

The authors used a variety of techniques to hone in on what was happening in the brains of the Tg mice compared to age-matched controls: cDNA microarray analysis, reverse transcription PCR, western blotting, and immunochemistry.

They found that a-synuclein messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein expression levels increase in a time-dependent manner in the hippocampus of Tg mice between ages 4 and 16 months and a-synuclein aggregation was noticeable at 16 months.

Age-related increases in a-synuclein were also seen in the control mice but to a lesser degree.

"We suggest that, besides increased AB (beta-amyloid) and amyloid plaques, overexpression and aggregation of a-synuclein in the hippocampus might partially account for cognitive impairment in this Tg mouse model of AD," comments co-lead investigator Lin Li, MD, PhD, Professor and Director, Department of Pharmacology, Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University in Beijing.

She added that "a-synuclein overexpression occurs even in the early phase of AD and may accelerate AB production and deposition, which further facilitates a-synuclein overexpression and accumulation."

Analysis of the TSG-treated groups showed that TSG-treatment from the age of 4 to 10 months significantly downregulated a-synuclein mRNA and protein overexpression in the hippocampus of the Tg mice, and the effect was stronger at the higher dose.

This suggests that TSG may have a role in preventing the neurotoxic effects of a-synuclein on synaptic function and cell activity.

In addition, the finding that Tg reduced a-synuclein overexpression in older animals (>10 months) may indicate that it has therapeutic potential even after neuropathologic changes have occurred.

The findings are published in the journal Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience.

Detroit emergency manager, a job for a "poor devil"

DETROIT/WILMINGTON, Delaware (Reuters) - Wanted: A financial whiz with powers of persuasion, an acute political radar and thick skin, for the demanding assignment of taking over a major American city on the brink of bankruptcy.

That's what Michigan Governor Rick Snyder is likely looking for as he decides whether to appoint an emergency financial manager for the city of Detroit, according to restructuring experts and Michigan politicians.

Snyder revealed this week that he has a "short list" of candidates for the job. He still awaits a report from a team of advisers to decide whether Detroit needs an emergency manager, said spokeswoman Sara Wurfel, but is "talking to and looking for prospective qualified candidates."

It's a job few may want as it will probably involve decisions that could lead to further cuts in jobs and services in a city that has been in decline for a long time - with its high crime rate, abandoned buildings and many unlit streets.

Still, success could make the manager a star in the world of restructuring - especially given a number of other financially distressed cities in the United States which might have to seek a similar savior.

"When there is not enough money to go around, somebody is going to be disappointed. And that disappointment will be aimed at whoever is the poor devil that took the job," said Steve Miller, a top turnaround specialist with strong Michigan ties who has worked for automakers Ford Motor Co and Chrysler Group LLC, and parts maker Delphi Automotive Plc.

The ideal qualifications would be someone with both a business background and a sense of public service to do the job for little or no pay, said Miller, who is now non-executive chairman of insurer American International Group, which was bailed out by the U.S. government during the financial crisis.

Scott Eisenberg, managing partner of corporate restructuring firm Amherst Partners and a past president of the Detroit chapter of the Turnaround Management Association, goes even further, saying "a magician" is needed for the job.

"You have a city council that doesn't want to lose control," Eisenberg said. "Who knows how much the mayor will go along. This will be filled with legal challenges over what you can and can't do. Everything the person does that is controversial will be challenged in court."

Snyder isn't talking about the candidates on his short-list, but politicians and restructuring experts say he needs to take their race into account. Eighty-three percent of Detroit's population is black and Mayor Dave Bing and city council members are all African American.

"To forcibly put a Caucasian in that position could have a very negative effect on the workforce, the voting populace and the people he will have to work with," said State Senator Virgil Smith, a Detroit Democrat, who is black.

A HISTORY-MAKING BANKRUPTCY

No large American city in recent history has seen a decline like Detroit. Once the fifth largest city in America, it is now only the 18th biggest, according to the latest population figures. With the exodus has come declines in the tax base and revenue, the flight of jobs, rising numbers of poor, increased crime and a city saddled with the infrastructure and labor costs of a bygone era.

Urban policy experts across the country are closely watching the struggles of Detroit, which could be an example for a number of cities still trying to recover from the housing bust and financial crisis, at a time when their pension and healthcare costs are soaring.

The emergency financial manager could choose to recommend that Detroit files for bankruptcy, although the decision ultimately rests with a board composed of people appointed by Snyder.

If Detroit files for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, its outstanding rated debt of $8.2 billion would make it the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history, almost double the 2011 filing by Alabama's Jefferson County.

Other American cities have gone to the edge of insolvency including New York in 1975, Cleveland in 1978 and Philadelphia in 1991. But none of them filed Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy.

Republican state lawmakers, who hold majorities in the legislature, said Snyder has not sought their counsel on the appointment of an emergency manager. But in interviews this week there was a virtual consensus among Michigan lawmakers in both parties that an emergency manager is likely.

"Every day that goes by and Detroit does not take action to save itself limits the governor's options," said Ari Adler, spokesman for Michigan's Republican House Speaker Jase Bolger.

NO POPULARITY CONTEST

Snyder has kept the names on his short list within a small circle of advisers, saying only that few people have the financial knowledge and people skills to do the job.

So far, several of the names swirling around Detroit political circles have said they are not in the running.

The Detroit News reported on Sunday that former Washington, D.C. mayor Anthony Williams, now in private law practice, had turned down the job. Repeated efforts to contact Williams for comment were not successful.

Another former politician whose name has surfaced in the speculation said he was not interested in the job.

"I am not a candidate for the emergency manager of Detroit," Thurbert Baker, a former attorney general of the state of Georgia now practicing law in Atlanta and Washington, told Reuters in an email.

If anyone knows the challenges a Detroit financial manager would face, it could be Robert Bobb, who from 2009 to 2012 served as the state-appointed emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools.

Bobb closed dozens of schools, outsourced school services, increased class sizes and laid off hundreds of teachers.

"If you are there for a popularity contest, then cast that aside," said Bobb, who said he had not been contacted about the Detroit emergency manager position.

While some described it as the job from hell, others said it could be a huge opportunity for someone to become the leading municipal turnaround specialist in the nation.

"It's a bit amorphous as to what constitutes success in this project, but there are a lot of careers built on one successful job," said Tim Skillman, a managing director in the Los Angeles office of turnaround firm Gavin/Solmonese.

Nightmare cruise finally over for thousands

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? The passengers of the Carnival cruise ship Triumph began the process of getting back to normal early Friday, checking into hotels for a shower, hot meal and good night's sleep or boarding buses bound for other cities after five numbing days at sea on a powerless ship disabled by an engine-room fire.

The cruise ship carrying some 4,200 people finally docked late Thursday in Mobile, as passengers raucously cheered the end to an ocean odyssey they say was marked by overflowing toilets, food shortages and foul odors.

"Sweet Home Alabama!" read one of the homemade signs passengers affixed alongside the 14-story ship as many celebrated at deck rails lining several levels of the stricken ship. The ship's horn loudly blasted several times as four tugboats pulled the crippled ship to shore at about 9:15 p.m. CST. Some gave a thumbs-up sign and flashes from cameras and cellphones lit the night.

Less than four hours later, the last passenger had disembarked.

Some, like 56-year-old Deborah Knight of Houston, had no interest in boarding one of about 100 buses assembled to carry passengers to hotels in New Orleans or Texas. Her husband Seth drove in from Houston and they checked into a downtown Mobile hotel.

"I want a hot shower and a daggum Whataburger," said Knight, who was wearing a bathrobe over her clothes as her bags were unloaded from her husband's pickup truck. She said she was afraid to eat the food on board and had gotten sick while on the ship.

Later, buses arrived in the pre-dawn darkness at the Hilton in New Orleans to reporters and paramedics on the scene with wheelchairs to roll in passengers who were elderly or too fatigued to walk.

Many were tired and didn't want to talk. There were long lines to check into rooms. Some got emotional as they described the deplorable conditions of the ship.

"It was horrible, just horrible" said Maria Hernandez, 28, of Angleton, Texas, tears welling in her eyes as she talked about waking up to smoke in her lower-level room Sunday and the days of heat and stench to follow. She was on a "girls trip" with friends.

She said the group hauled mattresses to upper-level decks to escape the heat. As she pulled her luggage into the hotel, a flashlight around her neck, she managed a smile and even a giggle when asked to show her red "poo-poo bag" ? distributed by the cruise line for collecting human waste.

This was only part of her journey to get home. Hernandez, like hundreds others, would get to enjoy a brief reprieve at the hotel before flying home later in the day.

"I just can't wait to be home," she said.

It wasn't long after the ship pulled into the Port of Mobile that passengers began streaming down the gang plank, some in wheelchairs and others pulling carry-on luggage. One man gave the thumbs up.

An ambulance pulled up to a gate and pulled away, lights flashing.

Carnival had said it would take up to five hours for all the 3,000 passengers to be off. It took closer to four.

"All guests have now disembarked the Carnival Triumph," Carnival tweeted.

For 24-year-old Brittany Ferguson of Texas, not knowing how long passengers had to endure their time aboard was the worst part.

"I'm feeling awesome just to see land and buildings," said Ferguson, who was in a white robe given to her aboard to weather the cold nights. "The scariest part was just not knowing when we'd get back."

As the ship pulled up, some aboard shouted, "Hello, Mobile!" Some danced in celebration on one of the balconies. "Happy V-Day" read one of the homemade signs made for the Valentine's Day arrival and another, more starkly: "The ship's afloat, so is the sewage."

A few dozen relatives on the top floor of the parking deck of the terminal were waving lights at the ship as it carefully made its way alongside. Those about were screaming, whistling and taking pictures.

Hundreds gawked from dockside at the arrival at the Alabama cruise terminal in Mobile, the state's only seaport, as the Triumph docked.

Taxis were lined up waiting for people, and motorists on Interstate 10 stopped to watch the exodus of passengers from the cruise ship.

Some still aboard chanted, "Let me off, let me off!"

It took six grueling hours navigating the 30-odd-mile ship channel to dock, guided by at least four towboats. Nearly 900 feet in length, it was the largest cruise ship ever to dock at Mobile.

In texts and flitting cellphone calls, the ship's passengers described miserable conditions while at sea.

Buses left the terminal over several hours. Up to 100 had been reserved to carry passengers either on a seven-hour ride to the Texas cities of Galveston or Houston or a two-hour trip to New Orleans.

Galveston is the home port of the ill-fated ship, which lost power in an engine-room fire Sunday some 150 miles off Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. It was the end of a cruise that wasn't anything like what a brochure might describe.

Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill apologized at a news conference and later on the public address system as people were disembarking.

"I appreciate the patience of our guests and their ability to cope with the situation. And I'd like to reiterate the apology I made earlier. I know the conditions on board were very poor," he said. "We pride ourselves on providing our guests with a great vacation experience, and clearly we failed in this particular case."

Passenger Ferguson said crew members tried to make the situation bearable.

"They did their best to keep our spirits up," she said.

Joseph and Cecilia Alvarez of San Antonio said some passengers passed the time by forming a Bible study group.

"It was awesome," he said. "It lifted up our souls and gave us hope that we would get back."

While the passengers are headed home, Triumph will head to a Mobile shipyard for assessment.

Earlier Thursday ? four days after the 893-foot ship was crippled in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico ? the passengers and crew suffered another setback with towline issues that brought the vessel to a dead stop for about an hour just as it was getting close to port.

As the vessel drew within cellphone range Thursday, passengers vented their anger.

In a text message, Kalin Hill, of Houston, described deplorable conditions over the past few days.

"The lower floors had it the worst, the floors 'squish' when you walk and lots of the lower rooms have flooding from above floors," Hill wrote. "Half the bachelorette party was on two; the smell down there literally chokes you and hurts your eyes."

She said "there's poop and urine all along the floor. The floor is flooded with sewer water ... and we had to poop in bags."

The company disputed the accounts of passengers who described the ship as filthy, saying employees were doing everything to ensure people were comfortable.

Carnival has canceled a dozen more planned voyages aboard the Triumph and acknowledged the crippled ship had been plagued by other mechanical problems in the weeks before the engine-room blaze. The National Transportation Safety Board has opened an investigation.

Passengers were supposed to get a full refund and discounts on future cruises, and Carnival announced Wednesday they would each get an additional $500 in compensation.

Kendall Jenkins of Houston won her first cruise as a contest prize. But she's never planning to set sail on a cruise again after the ill-fated voyage of the Triumph, despite the offer for another free cruise.

"This is my first and last cruise. So if anyone wants my free cruise look me up," said Jenkins, 24.

She and her friend, Brittany Ferguson, bounded off the ship Thursday night clad in bathrobes. They immediately kissed the pavement at the Port of Mobile, having spent their final minutes aboard jumping up and down excitedly.

(AP) ? Renewed worries about Europe overshadowed an encouraging U.S. jobs report on Thursday, leaving major stock indexes roughly where they started.

Germany's economy shrank more than expected late last year, and the slowdown in Europe's largest economy deepened the region's ongoing recession. That's a troubling sign for the U.S., because sales to Europe have been a boon for American companies.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 9.52 points to close at 13,973.39.

After a strong start, the stock market has drifted sideways over the previous week with few major events to sway investors. That calm could disappear soon, said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING U.S. Investment Management.

With recessions in Europe and Japan, and weak growth in the U.S., he's bracing for some turbulence. "Everybody is too complacent," Cote said.

Cisco Systems fell 1 percent. The world's largest maker of computer networking equipment reported earnings late Wednesday that surpassed Wall Street's expectations, but the company predicted sales growth that was weaker than previous estimates. Cisco's stock lost 15 cents to $20.99.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 1.05 to 1,521.38. The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.78 to 3,198.66.

The S&P 500 index has climbed 1.6 percent this month and has already gained 6.7 percent for the year.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell to 341,000 last week, the lowest level in three weeks, according to the Labor Department. Besides a few weeks last month affected by seasonal trends, that's the lowest level in nearly five years.

Among the many deals announced Thursday, American Airlines and U.S. Airways agreed to merge, creating the country's largest airline. Warren Buffett and 3G Capital, a private-equity firm, also plan to buy the ketchup maker H.J. Heinz for $23 billion. US Airways sank 67 cents to $13.99, while H.J. Heinz soared $12.02 to $72.41.

Constellation Brands soared 37 percent, the biggest gain in the S&P 500, after reaching a deal with Anheuser-Busch InBev. InBev agreed to sell a brewery in Mexico and rights for Corona and Modelo beer in the U.S. to Constellation for $2.9 billion. Constellation Brands gained $11.87 to $43.75.

In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 1.99 percent, down from 2.02 percent the day before.

The 10-year Treasury yield, used to set a variety of borrowing rates, began the year around 1.70 percent and has climbed steadily higher since then. As worries about a recession ease, traders have shifted money out of the Treasury market, driving yields up.

Among other companies making news:

? Whole Foods Market slumped 10 percent. The grocery store chain trimmed its forecasts for sales and earnings this year, a result of its plans to open more stores and put more lower-priced goods on its shelves. Whole Foods lost $9.40 to $87.50.

? General Motors fell 3 percent after the biggest U.S. carmaker said it made money in North America and Asia and nearly doubled last year's fourth-quarter profit. But its earnings fell short of analysts' estimates. GM's stock dropped 92 cents to $27.75.
