Google's ex-CEO gets $101M pay package in new job

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Shifting from Google's CEO to executive chairman proved to be lucrative career move for Eric Schmidt.

Google Inc. awarded Schmidt a compensation package valued at $101 million last year, according to a Friday regulatory filing. The amount is 322 times higher than the $313,219 package that Schmidt received in 2010 during his final full year as the Internet search leader's CEO.

Schmidt, 56, ended a decade-long stint as Google's CEO last April and turned over the job to Google co-founder Larry Page.

Shortly before the change in command, Google gave Schmidt stock and stock options valued at nearly $94 million, according to the company's proxy statement. Google had designed the stock and stock option package to be worth $100 million, but the compensation formula spelled out by securities regulators arrived at a slightly different calculation.

To top it off, Google raised Schmidt's salary from $1 annually as CEO to $1.25 million as executive chairman. His 2011 salary ended up being $937,500 because he spent the first three months of the year in the lower-paying job as CEO.

The rest of Schmidt's 2011 compensation consisted of a $6 million bonus and perks worth nearly $264,000. Schmidt deposited half of his bonus last year in a company plan that can defer payment for up to five years.

Page's compensation package totaled $1 last year, consisting solely of a nominal salary. He has maintained a $1 salary since 2005, although in some years he has accepted the Google's companywide holiday bonus. That's what happened in 2010 when Page's pay package totaled $1,723.

Weekly paychecks, annual bonuses and stock options haven't been essential to Schmidt or Page since Google's initial public offering of stock in August 2004. That IPO turned them, along with Google co-founder Sergey Brin, into multibillionaires who are perennials on Forbes' list of the world's richest people.

Forbes' latest rankings estimate Page, 39, and Brin, 38, are each worth nearly $19 billion. The magazine pegs Schmidt's wealth at nearly $7 billion.

Like Page, Brin limited his pay package last year to $1.

Since Google's IPO, Schmidt's total compensation package as CEO had never exceeded $560,000, based on an analysis of Google's past regulatory filings. From 2004 through 2010, Schmidt's combined compensation totaled $2.2 million.

In his new job as executive chairman, Schmidt serves as a company ambassador who meets with government regulators, explores potential acquisitions and makes public appearances.

In its proxy statement, Google described Schmidt's big stock and stock option package as a way to recognize his accomplishments as CEO. When Schmidt took in job in 2002, Google had annual revenue of $86 million and fewer than 300 employees. In Schmidt's final full year as CEO, Google had grown to a company with $29 billion in revenue and more than 24,000 employees.

Even after last year's big windfall, Schmidt is still raising cash. In February, he filed plans to sell up to 2.4 million shares of stock currently worth about $1.4 billion.

Page and Brin are in the process of selling 5 million Google shares apiece under a program scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Page, Brin and Schmidt have been Google's controlling shareholders since the IPO, thanks to a special class of stock that gives them 10 times the voting power of other shareholders. To ensure they remain in power as Google doles out more stock to pay employees and finance acquisitions, Brin and Page are pursuing a 2-for-1 stock split that will create new class of shares with zero voting power.

The unusual stock split announced last week has been derided by corporate governance experts who oppose disenfranchising other shareholders.

But the proposal is almost certain to be approved at Google's June 21 annual meeting because Page, Brin and Schmidt support it.

Friday's regulatory filing disclosed that the idea for the stock split was first broached in June 2010. Google's board then formed a special committee to analyze the pros and cons. After some haggling with Brin and Page over the limits on their control, the board reached a compromise earlier this month.

Earning Money On The Web Is Not That Hard When You Find A ...

You may be trying to find a legitimate business on the web, but not know where to start. In this post we are going to be discussing a number of the things you?re going to have to know in relation to choosing or starting up a legitimate internet business. I highly recommend that you pay attention to this article simply because the information can be very valuable and may result in your success or your failure.

If you are just getting started you are going to see that the most popular kinds of businesses to begin online are affiliate marketing and Network Marketing. Affiliate advertising is when you promote someone?s product and you receive a commission for the product you wind up selling. Creating traffic to an internet site will be all you genuinely have to do in relation to affiliate advertising. When it comes to Network Marketing you?re going to see that you want to sign up folks under you in a business to be able to generate income each and every month. The quantity of money you can make is determined by how many individuals you can sign up, together with how many each of them sign up. You?re going to discover that your income every month will continue to grow as you and your down line continue to bring in more individuals into this opportunity. Learn Digital Photography Now

Neither of these types of business models take much capital to get started, and they are very easy to learn, so either one should be the first business you try. You are going to find with regards to affiliate advertising, you?ll be provided with a web site where all you need to do is generate traffic to that page. There are lots of different ways of generating traffic and you ought to ensure you do your research before signing up for any type of traffic producing program. With Network Marketing it is very important to keep in mind that you?ll need to invest money every month for the product that the company is selling. Obviously if you did your research correctly before joining the program the product itself ought to be something you use and find useful. Rockwell RK1002K2 review

Another thing I should mention is that any program that tells you you will start making large amounts of money immediately is actually a program you need to avoid. You can not guarantee anything, no matter how good the product is mainly because you are trying to be building a business and it takes time. Do not forget that your main goal is going to be generating traffic, and you can discover a lot of free information on the web to be able to teach you precisely how to accomplish this properly. In affiliate marketing, begin with one product and then add more to keep boosting your income level. Some folks may claim that you could begin making cash immediately but you should not be discouraged if you don?t simply because building a business takes time. Rocket Italian

You?re not going to obtain a legitimate business on the net for nothing, anything worth having is worth working for, and an online business is no different. Spend some time to look for a business that fits you, and then work it as hard as you can.

NCEAS researchers offer new ecological model for deep-water oil spills

NCEAS researchers offer new ecological model for deep-water oil spills [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 20-Apr-2012

(Santa Barbara, Calif.) On the second anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform blowout, a national panel of researchers is providing new insight into what happened in the disaster, as well as a guide for how to deal with such events in the future, and why existing tools were inadequate to predict what lay before them.

The study, produced by the Gulf Oil Spill Ecotox Working Group at UC Santa Barbara's National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS), is published in the May issue of the journal Bioscience. It is titled, "A Tale of Two Spills: Novel Science and Policy Implications of an Emerging New Oil Spill Model."

"The old model assumed that oil would simply float up to the surface and accumulate there and along the coastline," said co-author Sean Anderson, an associate professor at California State University Channel Islands. "That model works well for pipeline breaks and tanker ruptures, but it is inadequate for this novel type of deep blowout."

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was unlike any oil spill science and society had encountered. The blowout occurred at unprecedented depths and released enormous quantities of oil (an estimated 4.9 billion barrels, or 206 million gallons). Marine and wildlife habitats suffered major damage, and, according to authors, the damage continues to happen today, out of sight. Local and regional economies and livelihoods suffered as well.

According to the researchers a renowned group of ecotoxicologists, oceanographers, and ecologists who convened under the auspices of NCEAS while the spill was still active the response to clean up and contain the oil followed a framework that assumed the oil's behavior would mimic the more familiar shallow-water and surface spills, despite the fact that the dynamics, fate, and effect of deep-water oil on ecosystems are not understood.

"As the Deepwater Horizon spill unfolded, you would hear folks saying things like, 'We all know what happens when oil and water mix; the oil floats.' That wasn't the whole story, and that assumptions and actions that were not the best possible use of our time and effort," said Anderson.

After synthesizing existing knowledge to anticipate the potential ecotoxicological effects of the spill, and highlighting major gaps in scientific understanding, the scientists have created the first complete conceptual model for understanding both the Deepwater Horizon spill and analogous disasters in the future.

This new model accounts for how deepwater oil spills unfold and where the resulting ecological impacts accrue. It also emphasizes that the vast majority of the oil is retained at depth rapidly emulsified and dispersed due to the physics of the pressurized oil jetting from the tip of the wellbore and, among other response actions, calls into question the efficacy of dispersants.

"We have generally hailed the use of [chemical] dispersants as helpful, but really are basing this on the fact we seemed to have kept oil from getting to the surface," argues co-author Gary Cherr, director of UC Davis's Bodega Marine Lab. "The truth is, much of this oil probably was staying at depth, independent of the amount of surfactants we dumped into the ocean. And we dumped a lot of dispersants into the ocean all told, approximately one-third of the global supply."

Co-author Ron Tjeerdema, chair of the Environmental Toxicology Department at UC Davis, concurs. "The problem is, we really must address the downside of such compounds, particularly in light of the fact that the upside probably was not so great as it seemed at the time," he said.

Armed with a new foundation for research and policy implications, the NCEAS Gulf Oil Spill Ecotox Working Group is calling for further investigation into the long-term effects of deep-water oil spills.

"We now have a sense that the bulk of the impact was probably in the mid-water and deep ocean," said the study's lead author, Charles "Pete" Peterson, a professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who has been deeply involved in the study of the environmental effects of the Exxon Valdez oil spill for over two decades. "Who the heck knows what oil does to the mid-water pelagic and deep-dwelling critters? We need an integrated collaboration between deepwater explorers, modelers, ecotoxicologists, microbial ecologists, and so on all working together in unprecedented ways. We need a whole new type of marine ecology."

Instapaper vs Pocket vs Readability: Read later app for iPhone shootout!

Instapaper, Pocket (formerly known as Read It Later), and Readability are all great ways to "read later", or time-shift the Web articles and other content you don't have time to read now. (Think of them as TiVo for the web.) Some are highly focused on text, others also prioritize photos and videos. Some are highly focused on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad only, others offer more cross-platform and Android support. Each one tries to solve the same problem -- letting you enjoy the content you want to enjoy, when you want to enjoy it -- but goes about it in a different way. So which one does it best, and for whom?

Stress of Caregiver for Ailing Spouse

Spousal Caregiver

Boca Home Care Services works with many families where an aging spouse becomes the caregiver to an ailing one. This can be either to a loved one with a physcal impairment or a cognitive one. Alzheimer?s Demetia is a leading creator of the spousal or family caregiver. The Caregiver Job Description is so stress producing that it is almost certain that a Caregiver has Stress. The ?commandments? to help manage that stress is to take care of yourself, have an outlet, and get HELP. Getting help is so key but often the resistance to getting or accepting help just adds to the stress.? When a friend, family member or neighbor offers a little help- try saying ?Thank you? and take them up on the offer. Consider a Day Care program and certainly explore hiring a caregiver to give yourself respite time off. Hiring? a caregiver can be a short term ?treatment? and be used intermittently.? Remember, if you, the Caregiver collapses, then the family (grown children) have 2 parents in need of care. Most Adult children will prefer to help financially to prevent the greater stresses of both parents ailing. In any case, it is an adult child?s right to offer help or not,?to their mother or father.

We know when we are feeling stressed. Here are?types of caregiver stress (identified by?the Alzheimer?s Association)?which can combine over time to overwhelm and cause health problems?to even the most loving, caring, well meaning and proficient family caregivers. Identify your stress and speak to your family and doctor about it to help find reasonable solutions.

* DENIAL about the disease and how it effects the person disagnosed.

* ANGER at the person, at yourself, the medical community, and of all those around you who don?t understand or don?t want to either.

* SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL from friends and activities once enjoyed.

* ANXIETY about the day to day list of worries,? care responsibilities and the ?what ifs? of the future.

*DEPRESSION causing the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness which lessens your ability to cope and breaks your spirit.

* SLEEPLESSNESS &?EXHAUSTION ?which makes doing routine tasks, let alone enjoyable ones?that much harder and puts your overall health at greater risk.

* IRRITABILITY which leads to loss of patience, moodiness and triggers negative responses or actions.

* LACK of CONCENTRATION which leads to forgetfulness and makes doing?even routine tasks more difficult.

HEALTH PROBLEMS which start taking a toll on your mental and physical well being. This can be both stress related and a sign that you are not tending you your own health needs often enough.

As a family caregiver you probably recognize the entire list and may have more to add. Stress on a structure and on a person builds to a point where something, or someone gives way. Actively find ways which best help you to reduce your stress before it breaks you.

As many as 1.5 million MasterCard and Visa?cards?in North America may have been affected in the breach involving Global Payments.

Even if they haven't noticed anything amiss yet, the danger has hardly passed. Being part of a breach makes an individual six times more likely to be the victim of fraud or identity theft, according to Javelin Strategy & Research.

Here's what to do if you suspect your data has been breached:

BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS.

Being extra careful and watching for signs of possible trouble is important. When hackers glean consumer information through attacks like the breach at Global Payments, they can use it to mine more data online about those individuals. That makes it easier to send targeted emails that mimic messages from a consumer's bank ? a process known as "spear phishing," a more sophisticated version of the phony email efforts known as "phishing" in that they incorporate your personal information.

REVIEW STATEMENTS CLOSELY.

Keep a close eye out for unexpected charges on your financial statements. Even a $1 charge could be a sign that a thief has your account number and is testing to see if you notice anything unexpected. If you spot any unauthorized purchases, a call to the?credit?card?company will start an investigation and the questionable purchases will be reversed under most circumstances. Companies also will issue new account numbers upon request.

If you don't receive your statement on time, that may be a red flag that something isn't right. One popular tactic with thieves is changing the billing address on existing accounts to delay their detection.

UPDATE SOFTWARE AND BROWSERS.

Protect yourself from online fraud and identity theft with browser security software on your computers and mobile devices. If you already have anti-virus software, make sure to update it.

Be sure to use the most recent version of your Internet browser. Older versions can have security weaknesses that leave you at risk. Also, set your anti-virus and anti-spyware software to auto-update and use an Internet firewall.

MONITOR YOUR?CREDIT?REPORT.

The three national?credit?reporting companies ? Equifax, Experian and TransUnion ? are required by law to provide consumers with one free?credit?report each year, upon request. The reports can be obtained at www.annualcreditreport.com or by mail.

If you believe there may be a problem, considering asking them to put a fraud alert and possibly a security freeze on your?credit?information.

Is There Common Sense in Personal Finance? | The Debt Princess

I don?t like the phrase ?common sense? when it is paired with anything related to personal finance. In my opinion, there is nothing common about finances when you are uneducated.

By watching what I was being exposed to growing up, it was common to be in debt. If you needed a new car, then common sense said to get a car loan. If you were short one month and needed groceries, common sense said to use a credit card to purchase them.

Those actions were common, every day occurrences and that made them common sense.

budgets confusingThe topic for this blog post came from a post on the Payoff.com Blog. ?8 Common Sense Do?s and Don?ts of Personal Finance? really resonated with me. Of those 8, presumed ?common sense? steps, I have failed at all eight of them! No surprise there when you come from a family that never discussed money and lived with a parent who used her credit cards a lot.

I think the article could have been reworded and approached differently and the impact would have been better. To know that I?ve failed those 8 steps in my past makes me feel like I am ignorant.

Some things are NOT common sense.

When you do not have a financial education there is no common sense to personal finance. I certainly think there are people who have the mindset capable of thinking about it but I don?t think that?s the average person and that, in my opinion, is what makes something ?common sense.?

If you are a parent, it is your responsibility to teach your children about making more money than they spend. If you don?t, you?ll have an adult who lives how they wants to live and then makes ?ends meet? by acquiring debt in the form of a credit card.

If you do not show your children how to track their spending and budget their finances, you will see your child become an adult who is in debt and struggling with their life.

Personal finance is not common sense.

It is a confusing topic for many people and one that needs to be explained before common sense becomes credit cards, overspending and under-budgeting.

April is Financial Literacy Month. My goal with this blog has always been to show people the face of debt in the hopes that they will learn about personal finance themselves and then teach those they love about it too. My new career goal is to take this blog and turn it into opportunities to speak about personal finance and the importance of financial literacy. There is no better time than today to learn something new and pass that information on.

How thoughtful farming could curb climate change, feed the world

Policy makers may begin to address climate change by encouraging sustainable agriculture practices around the world, according to a new report.

It's never been easy to ensure that people around the world have enough to eat. And now, with the effects of climate change and the world's population both on the rise, it's more difficult than ever to feed everyone.

"Agriculture is both part of the problem and part of the solution to climate change," wrote Sir John Beddington, chair of the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change, in a report released today.

The problem with agriculture is that it significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. According to the BBC, farming produces approximately one-third of the world's emissions. These emission contributions stem from fossil fuel combustion and the clearing of otherwise forested areas.?

Climate change will increase temperature variability and alter the amount and patterns of precipitation. These, among other challenges, will make the process of growing food more difficult in the future.?

To address the problem of food security, the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change was charged with clarifying global policy goals in advance of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil in June.

This group of 13 natural and social scientists from around the world suggest seven areas for policy action. Their report was presented at today's Planet Under Pressure conference in London, UK.

On the economic front, the commission recommends that the world's richest countries make significant increases in investment in sustainable agriculture in the next decade. This might mean that the world's richest countries would pay out the $20 billion they promised for agricultural development in 2009.

The commission also suggested reducing waste in the food system. They pointed to specific areas where waste reduction could make a difference, including infrastructure, farming practices, processing, distribution and household habits.

Christine Negra, a scientist who coordinated the commission's work told the BBC, "the less we waste food, the less food we have to produce, the less greenhouse gases are emitted."

Property Managers Landlords and Real Estate Investors ? 5 Warning Signs of Fraudulent Property Deeds

Property Managers, Landlords and Real Estate Investors- State Agency Warns Consumers of Forged and Fraudulent Property Deeds

Property managers, landlords and real estate investors, the California Department of Real Estate (DRE) issued a Consumer Alert last week about the growing number of scams that involve forged or fraudulent property deeds and what consumers can do to protect themselves against such fraud. The DRE is a state department whose mission is to protect the public interests in real estate matters.

?In the current economic climate, criminal fraud related to real property deeds is on the rise and homeowners should be on the lookout for red flags to ensure the title to their property is protected? stated Barbara Bigby, Acting Real Estate Commissioner.

The department issued the alert to educate the public about the document recordation process, highlight some of the different types of deed scams which are being perpetrated against property owners, and to provide a checklist of warning signs that suggest or signify fraud. The Alert also informs victims of actions they can take, including what steps are necessary to rectify ?clouded? ownership records.

The warning signs of deed fraud include:

You stop receiving your property tax bill or notices.

You receive a Notice of Default or Notice of Trustee?s Sale when you own your home outright, or when you have a mortgage and you are not delinquent on your loan payments.

You receive loan documents in the mail for a loan or transaction that you have no knowledge of. You learn of a recorded document on your property where ownership in your property, or a portion thereof, was transferred or sold to another party without your knowledge.

You learn of a recorded document on your property where the signer of the document was deceased at the time of execution of the document.

Changes or alterations were made to a recorded document after you signed it.

The key to stopping these kinds of scams is to immediately act on any suspicious activity. Initial steps a homeowner should take immediately include:

Contact the County Recorder?s Office and let them know of the fraud.

Report the activity to local law enforcement. Many counties now have real estate fraud divisions within the office of the District Attorney.

Most recorded documents require a notarized signature and as such, a complaint should be filed with the California Secretary of State, Notary Public Section, if you suspect a forged signature on a notarized document.

Contact your title insurance company to determine if forged deeds are covered under your title insurance policy.

File a complaint with the DRE if you suspect that a real estate broker or salesperson, or unlicensed person purporting to be a real estate licensee, is involved in the forging of any deed or fraudulent recording of a false, fictitious, or forged deed.

Consult with a licensed and knowledgeable California attorney. Bogus deeds may be void or annulled.

Property managers, landlords and real estate investors, to obtain a copy of the Alert and to learn more about the DRE and its program areas, visit www.dre.ca.gov.
