Egypt's Islamist president to visit US next month

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt says its president will visit the United States next month, his first trip there since taking office June 30.

Presidential spokesman Yasser Ali told reporters Wednesday that Mohammed Morsi's three-day visit starts Sept. 23. It will include Washington and New York, where he will attend the U.N. General Assembly session.

Morsi is from the Muslim Brotherhood. Its rise in Egypt has caused discomfort in Washington, but both sides have been trying to overcome the misgivings.

The Brotherhood has sent delegations to the U.S. to argue that it is a moderate group with no anti-American agenda.

U.S. officials recently pledged additional foreign aid to Egypt, another gesture toward maintaining close ties.

The U.S. has been giving Egypt about $1 billion a year in military aid for more than three decades.

India faces Twitter backlash over Internet clampdown

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian government faced an angry backlash from Twitter users on Thursday after ordering Internet service providers to block about 20 accounts that officials said had spread scare-mongering material that threatened national security.?

The backlash came as New Delhi turned up the heat on Twitter, threatening "appropriate and suitable action" if it failed to remove the accounts as soon as possible. Several Indian newspapers said this could mean a total ban on access to Twitter in India but government officials would not confirm to Reuters that such a drastic step was being considered.?

There was no immediate response from Twitter, which does not have an office in India. There are about 16 million Twitter users in the South Asian country.?

The government has found itself on the defensive this week over what critics see as a clumsy clampdown on social media websites ? including Google, YouTube and Facebook ? that has raised questions about freedom of information in the world's largest democracy.

The government says Google and Facebook have largely cooperated while Twitter has been much slower to respond.?

"Every company, whether it's an entertainment company, or a construction company, or a social media company, has to operate within the laws of the given country," said Sachin Pilot, minister of state in the Ministry of Communications.?

Twitter has been instructed to remove 28 pages containing "objectionable content", an interior ministry official said.?

"If they do not remove the pages, the Indian government will take appropriate and suitable action," he added.?

The government has ordered Internet service providers to block the Twitter accounts of veteran journalist Kanchan Gupta and television anchor Shiv Aroor. Some appeared to have begun complying with the order on Thursday as Twitter users reported difficulties in accessing their pages.?

"It is a political decision, because of my criticism of the government," said Gupta, who was an official in the previous government led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.?

The government's actions triggered a storm of criticism from Twitter users, with the hashtags #Emergency2012 and #GOIBlocks among the top trending topics on Twitter in India on Thursday. Some compared the situation with the state of emergency imposed by the government in 1975, when some journalists were jailed.?

The Centre for Internet and Society, which analyzed the 300 banning orders, found that they contained "numerous mistakes and inconsistencies". Some of the banned websites belonged to people trying to debunk the rumors, for example, it said.?

"This isn't about political censorship. This is about the government not knowing how to do online regulation properly," said CIS program manager Pranesh Prakash.?

India's parliament last year passed a law that obliges Internet companies to remove a range of objectionable content when requested to do so, a move criticized at the time by rights groups and social media companies.?

We think we have the secret sauce to make the game last longer and become more fun and exciting in the process. It?s like we are gamifying genealogy. ?

?I love family history, and I spend hours doing it at night,? said Wells. ?It is a grueling process, but it is thrilling. I thought we could make it into a game.?

The game has been in beta testing since April 2011, and it has more than 30,000 users, despite no advertising. The online community that you create can be set in a time such as the 1800s, when your ancestors lived. You can set them up in the clothes of the era and personalize the avatars so they actually look like your ancestors. You can create multiple villages across different time periods, collaborate on a family tree with other family members or friends, and access more historical documents via search.

The business model is novel. Rather than buying traditional virtual goods in the free-to-play game, you purchase historical documents for 50 cents or a dollar.

Users can also upload their own family documents and pictures or write fun stories about family members. The breadth of tasks explains why an average single-session playtime is 14 minutes, or triple the industry average. The game becomes more valuable to the player over time because of the increased chance of discovering new family history research and unknown family members.

The game will likely have appeal in Europe and China, where family history research is a popular cultural interest. But it may not be as useful in countries where documents have not been translated into English or kept at all, Wells acknowledged.

Wells said his founding team shares deep history in genealogy, having been involved in the Ancestry.com, GeneTree, and the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation. In the game, players build businesses and houses and ?immigrate? family members into the community. They assign jobs based on the time period in which the family member lived. Then Family Village matches the data to real-world documents about the living users and their deceased family relatives. These sources include newspaper articles, census records, and other documents. The objective is to understand and protect your family legacy. You start with a seedling, and over time you grow your family tree.

?It creates connections and discussion between family members,? said Wells.

Jim Sorenson, the lead investor in Ancestry.com, met Wells about four years ago and introduced him to cofounder Paul Allen. Sorenson?s Family Odyssey firm and other angel investors put $3 million into Funium. The company was founded in 2010 and has under 50 employees.

Wall Street poised to make four-year high

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures edged higher on Tuesday, with Wall Street set to make another run at a four-year high as equity markets continue to grind steadily higher on hopes that central banks will act in the near future to stimulate their economies.

The S&P 500 has risen nearly 3 percent so far in August. Much of those gains have come on a few outsized days while other days have seen small incremental gains. Volumes have been light as investors wait for central banks' meetings next month where policymakers are expected to take action to ease Europe's debt crisis and boost the economy.

"I am looking for new highs in the major indexes," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York. "Overall there is no one major negative that's out there right now that people are scared of."

The perception of declining risks from the euro crisis has been a major factor behind equity gains. Yields at a Spanish short-term debt auction dived on Tuesday, while Europe's volatility index VSTOXX hit a one-month low, signaling a steady rise in investors' appetite for risk.

The S&P 500 needs to pass this year's high of 1,422.38 set in April to make a four-year intraday high. That would take the index back to May 2008. The index closed 1,418.13 on Monday.

"With no negative headlines dampening enthusiasm the market looks ahead to another milestone," said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York. "That could easily be accomplished today."

S&P 500 futures rose 2.6 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 24 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 8 points.

Best Buy Co shares slumped 10 percent premarket. The company cut its fiscal-year profit outlook on Tuesday, citing lower expectations for industrywide sales and uncertainty about key product introductions, and the consumer electronics retailer suspended its share buybacks for the year.

Signs that the U.S. labor market is performing better than previously thought have also helped stocks.

European stocks rose, keeping a four-week rally alive, as investors bet the European Central Bank will soon start buying Spanish and Italian bonds to help lower their borrowing costs. The FTSEurofirst 300 rose 0.2 percent.

Facebook Inc director Peter Thiel sold roughly $400 million worth of shares in the Internet social networking company last week, cashing out most of his stake. The sale comes as Facebook shares lost 50 percent of their value since its IPO earlier this year. The shares fell 0.9 percent to $19.84 in premarket trade.

The chief executives of Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd have talked but did not settle the high-stakes patent dispute between the two electronics companies, a Samsung attorney said in court on Monday.

Citigroup Chief Executive Vikram Pandit has rejected the idea of big banks being split up, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday. Pandit said Citi, formed through mergers such as the acquisition of Travelers in 1998, had already gone back to the basics of banking, and had sold most of the units from that deal.

Global buyout fund KKR & Co L.P. has placed a bet on China's $38 billion youth apparel retail market, saying that it will acquire a stake in privately held retailer Novo Holdco Ltd for $30 million.

U.S. stocks closed flat on Monday after a six-week run of gains as the European Central Bank quashed a report on what strategy it may use in any market intervention to stem the region's debt crisis.

Curacao, Conn., Mexico avoid elimination at LLWS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? Kevin Oricoli finally has bragging rights over his big brother.

Not many 12-year-old boys can say they hit a two-run single at the Little League World Series.

Oricoli's two-out clutch hit keyed a three-run third inning, and Matt Kubel silenced Nebraska's bats to help Fairfield, Conn., avoid elimination Saturday at the Little League World Series with a 12-0 victory.

Oricoli is savoring the moment ? and not just because his team is one step closer to a Little League title.

His 14-year-old brother, Jack, played on the Fairfield American All-Star team last year that lost in the regional semifinals. Egged on by his manager, Bill Meury, Oricoli didn't waste an opportunity to talk smack following Saturday's win after a reporter asked who was getting the last laugh in the Oricoli family.

"Right now, right now, everyone except my brother. As you know, I made it farther than him," Oricoli said, smiling, as Meury laughed. "Now, he's jealous of me and now it's kind of awkward around him now because he's jealous."

The kids from Curacao were feeling pretty good, too, after staying in contention with a 14-2 victory over Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The Kearney, Neb., team and Germany will play Monday in a consolation game after both teams were eliminated.

Mexico also relied on the lumber in eliminating from contention the adopted hometown favorites from Uganda, 12-0. Three Mexico pitchers tossed the first combined perfect game in World Series history in a contest that ended after four innings due to Little League's 10-run rule.

In the nightcap, Emil Matti hit two solo homers and scored four runs to spark Parsippany, N.J.'s 10-4 victory that eliminated Gresham, Ore. Uganda will play Oregon in another consolation game Tuesday.

Connecticut gets a well-earned day off before returning to the diamond Monday. Kubel, a 13-year-old lefty whose favorite player is Yankees ace lefthander C.C. Sabathia, frustrated his foes with well-placed fastballs and about a half-dozen harmless bouncers to third.

Kubel, who struck out six over 4 2-3 innings, was a little anxious coming into the elimination game.

"Obviously, you get a little nervous looking at 10,000 people in the stands, but I just tried to focus and play my game," he said with an ice pack strapped to his left elbow.

Nebraska's strategy to swing early in the count to avoid falling behind to Kubel and his big curve didn't work.

After Connecticut's own slow start, the offense exploded for three runs in the third and six in the fourth. Both times, the bottom of Connecticut's order got the rallies going.

Ninth-place hitter Patrick Steed reached base on a walk in the third before coming home on Oricoli's single. Steed also doubled in a run in the fourth. Will Lucas added a homer and five RBIs.

Nebraska manager Brad Wegner hoped to get his team refocused to leave South Williamsport with a win in Monday's consolation game.

"They've had a great time, but they're hugely disappointed," Wegner said. "It's been an awesome experience."

One that Jack Oricoli was able to share with his little brother after cheering him on from the stands. He took Kevin's good-natured ribbing in stride.

"He was with me last year during regionals and I'm here with him in Williamsport," Jack said as the boys' father, Steve, smiled nearby. "And yeah, he's gotten farther than me and he's teasing me about it."

CURACAO 14, GERMANY 2

Christopher Koeiman had the big blow in an eight-run first inning for the winners from Willemstad, Curacao with a three-run homer to center. Rallison Bentura added a two-run single, and Curacao also took advantage of four errors in the inning by the Europe region champions, comprised of children whose parents serve or work at the U.S. military installation in Germany.

Justin Wilson and Kyle Glenn each had RBI singles for Germany in the third.

The Ramstein team already has a date to attend a Yankees game in New York after the tournament, but manager Eric Vincent wants his players focusing on one last game together Monday, in front of family and friends who made the trip.

"They burnt up a lot of leave and vacations," Vincent said. "Some winter vacations are going to be lost, but it's all worth it to make it here."

MEXICO 12, UGANDA 0

The first team from Africa to advance to the World Series in the 66-year history of the tournament received a baseball lesson from Mexico's mini-mashers from Nuevo Laredo.

Joel Turrubiates homered and drove in three runs for Mexico, which avoided elimination. The sluggers have hit eight homers in two games at the World Series.

Saturday night's power surge was more than enough support for Mexico after Felix Diaz, Sebastian Cuellar and Turrubiates tossed the combined perfect game. It also was the first perfect game of any kind in the tournament since Mexico's Jesus Sauceda threw one in 2008.

Baseball is an emerging sport in Uganda, where soccer is more popular. The Little League program in Uganda began only several years ago, and organizers hope the World Series trip gets more children there interested in baseball and softball.

"This is a message to all of Africa, We can't be worried about results," Uganda manager Henry Odong said. "We have to get the kids to play the game.

A 13-year-old shortstop, Matti did his best impersonation of Yankees leadoff hitter Derek Jeter for the New Jersey team from the New York suburb of Parsippany.

Matti, hit both his shots to center, including a blast to lead off the game that caromed off the top of the brick wall beyond the fence 225 feet away.

Trailing 5-0 in the second, the Gresham, Ore., squad rallied to within 5-4 on Tyler Linch's two-run single in the third.

But Linch was later tagged out at home by catcher Anthony Scannelli after trying to score the potential tying run on a grounder to second.

Oregon will play Uganda in a consolation game Tuesday after being eliminated from title contention.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Pinch-hitter Carlos Pena delivered a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, Evan Longoria also hit a two-run shot and the Tampa Bay Rays overcame an eight-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-8 on Saturday night.

Jake McGee (4-2) earned the win with a perfect seventh inning and Fernando Rodney got three outs for his major league-leading 38th save. The Rays, held to one hit over the first four innings by C.J. Wilson, rallied from an 8-0 hole with seven runs in the fifth against the All-Star left-hander.

Rodney ended the game by striking out Erick Aybar and retiring pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis on a grounder with runners at second and third.

The Military Frequent Flyer - Best Uses for Miles for Military Members

So everyone knows the basics of earning miles and redeeming them for a free flight, right?? Well, here are some tips on using those miles in a smarter manner and for ways that are applicable to military flyers.

A key fact to remember is that dollar prices of miles almost alway rise the closer you get to the flight?s date.? With miles the price stays constant, although ?saver awards? can be gone if you wait too long.? Many people complaing that ?saver awards? are so hard to get for the flight that you want that you might as well plan on paying the ?standard award?.? My own experience is hit or miss and just consider myself lucky if a saver award is available without trying to book a trip a year in advance.? Life is too hectic for me to plan that far in advance.

With that in mind, use the axiom that if you can lock in a flight far in advance, use dollars, if it is short notice use miles.? The mile to dollar exchange ratio here will be very much in your favor.? So your flgiht for your wedding anniversary = dollars.? The flight to Vegas for your buddy?s bachelor party?= miles.

This rule come in handy for a great military benefit, Space-A Travel.? The problem with Space-A is that you are dependent of the Air Force following their schedule and this is often not a good bet.?? So while the flight may get you to your destination, you may get stranded for several days there if the bird breaks down or fills up with a priority mission.? FF Miles to the rescue!? Take the flight and use miles for that ticket home?if you get stranded.? If you really want to be smart about it, go ahead and book a one way ticket home using miles and cancel it if the flight looks like it is going to be a go.? That gives you a better chance to get a saver award, but make sure you don?t forget to cancel if you don?t need it.

Another great use of miles is for one way tickets.? Some airlines, such as Southwest, Alaska and American, price a one way ticket at half of the round trip price.? Makes sense, but that is not the traditional way airlines priced these.? They priced a one way ticket as half of the full fare price, meaning a discounted round trip ticket could be less than a one way ticket.? United and some of the legacy carriers are still this way, so it creates a real problem to use them for a one way flight.? Only a few years ago, FF programs did not have redemption levels for one way flight, but now most do.? This makes a great value when you have to take a one way flight and save you a lot of dollars.? The military seems to end up in situations where we need to fly one way quite a bit, mostly due to our many moves, but this strategy can come in handy in many situations such as when your kid flunks out of college and wants a one way ticket home.? Just kidding.

Lastly, don?t forget when spending your miles the traditional way to use them for your lovely spouse first and pay for your own seat so you can earn more miles and greater status.

South Africa police say fired in self-defense; 34 killed

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - South African police were forced to open fire to protect themselves from charging armed protesters at the Marikana mine, and 34 of the protesters were killed, Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega said on Friday.

She told a news conference that 78 people were injured and 259 arrested in Thursday's violence.

"The police members had to employ force to protect themselves from the charging group," Phiyega said.

"Mad Men" star John Slattery joins "Arrested Development"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - John Slattery is taking time out from Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce to hang out with the Bluths.

"Mad Men" star Slattery, who plays senior partner Roger Sterling on the AMC drama, will appear in multiple episodes of the Netflix-revived "Arrested Development," an individual close to the production told TheWrap.

Details on Slattery's character, or how many episodes he will appear in, were not available.

Series producer and narrator Ron Howard told MTV News on Wednesday that series creator Mitch Hurwitz would be introducing new characters to the resurrected show.

"Mitch isn't trying to recreate something," Howard said. "It's been away for a while, and part of the fun that Mitch has been mining and exploiting is, what's new to discover about these people? What's delightfully unchanged? He and the writing staff and the actors have a fantastic sense of that."

Production on the new season of cult favorite "Arrested Development," which ran on Fox from 2003 to 2006, began last week, with series star Jason Bateman tweeting a photo from the set and writing, "First day. Away we go..."

Netflix gave a 10-episode order to "Arrested Development" and will make all of the new episodes available simultaneously next year.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Families of Iran's slain nuclear scientists have filed a lawsuit against Israel, the U.S. and Britain accusing them of involvement in the assassination of their loved ones.

Rahim Ahmadi Roshan, father of Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, the slain chemistry expert and a director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran, told a press conference in Tehran Wednesday that the families have demanded Iran's judiciary to pursue their complaint through international bodies and bring those behind the killings to justice.

"We've filed an indictment against the Zionist regime and the arrogant powers," Roshan told reporters."(The judiciary) is to pursue this case with the relevant international bodies."

Iran's state television broadcast purported confessions earlier this month by 14 suspects in connection with the killing of five nuclear scientists since 2010.

The TV also showed pictures from a military garrison it said was a training camp outside Tel Aviv in Israel. It said the suspects took courses there, including how to place magnetic bombs on cars ? the method used in the killing of the scientists.

The suspects also acknowledged in the purported confessions that they received training in Israel.

Iran says the attacks are part of a covert campaign by Israel and the West to sabotage its nuclear program, which the U.S. and its allies suspect is aimed at producing nuclear weapons. Iran denies that.

Iran has blamed Israel's Mossad as well as the CIA and Britain's MI6 for the assassinations, with support from some of Iran's neighbors. The U.S. and Britain have denied involvement in the slayings. Israel has not commented.

"Through this complaint, we declare to the world that actions of arrogant governments, led by the U.S., Britain and the occupying Zionist regime, in assassinating nuclear scientists and elites is against human principles," according to a statement read out by Mansoureh Karami, wife of slain Tehran University physics professor Masoud Ali Mohammadi.

"While filing our complaint and announcing our protest, we resolutely declare that not only will such disgraceful acts not prevent the advancement of the children of this land in science, it will cause them to take more effective steps with greater determination," she said.

In May, Iran hanged Majid Jamali Fashi, 24, who was sentenced to death for the 2010 killing of Ali Mohammadi. Fashi, who said in televised confessions that he was recruited by Mossad, was convicted last August.

Officials say the campaign against Iran includes the abduction of Iranian scientists, the sale of faulty equipment and the planting of a destructive computer worm known as Stuxnet, which briefly brought Iran's uranium enrichment activity to a halt in 2010.
