Lower rates give no respite to Brazil stocks | Global Investing

In normal times, an aggressive central bank campaign to cut interest rates would provide fodder for stock market bulls. That?s not happening in?Brazil.?Its?interest rate, the Selic, has fallen 350 basis?points since last August and?is?likely to fall further at this week?s meeting to a?record low of 8.5 percent. Yet the Sao Paulo stock?market is among the world?s worst performers this year, with losses of?around 4 percent. That?s?better than fellow BRIC Russia but?far worse?than India and China.

Brazil?s central bank and government are understandably worried about a Chinese growth slowdown that would eat into Brazilian commodity exports. They are therefore hoping that rate cuts will prepare the domestic economy to take up the slack.

But the haste to cut interest rates?appears to have?spooked some foreign investors, with many?seeing the moves as evidence of political pressure on the central bank. A closely-watched survey from Bank of America/Merill Lynch showed that fund managers had swung into a net 14 percent underweight?on Brazil in May?from?a?net?overweight of over 20 percent in April?(See graphic).?This is the first time investors?have turned?negative on Brazil?since February 2011, BofA/ML said.

Brazil is?the least favoured BRIC play forNick Timberlake,?who oversees?more than $10?billion in BRIC equities at? HSBC Global Asset?Management.?It accounts for just 17 percent of the portfolio?(India is 22 percent, China 29 percent and Russia 31 percent). That?s because:

Valuation signals in Brazil and companies? profitability are not as strong as the other BRICs?and it?s fair to say there are question marks over the independence of the central bank.

Moreover, Brazil?s banks are bearing the brunt of the government?s drive to?boost cheap credit, with shares in?banks such as Bradesco and Itau suffering heavy losses this year.?First, loan delinquencies are rising, with the default ratio the highest since November 2009.? But as big state-run banks dish out cheap loans, private banks are also?facing pressure to lend more and at?lower rates. That is likely to further drive up default rates.??Timberlake says:

(The government) has been trying to squeeze spreads on bank loans and these are not good things as far as stocks are concerned.

And in spite of the policymakers? rate-cutting spree, growth is slumping. Analysts?polled by Reuters see the economy growing by less than 3 percent this year, well below levels expected from India, China and Russia. All eyes will be on China now, says John-Paul Smith at Deutsche Bank.

Prices (for Brazilian stocks) have come off a long way but what keeps me negative is my view on the Chinese economy, that it will slow further. If that happens, the biggest victims will be Brazil and Russia.

Investigators in?Qatar?carried out their first extensive probes through a fire-ravaged daycare center and other charred areas inside the country's biggest mall Tuesday after a blaze that killed 19 people, including 13 children.

The blaze and equipment failures that hampered firefighting raised questions about safety measures in the megastructures across the wealthy Gulf.

The findings from the state-ordered inquest are expected within a week, the official?Qatar?News Agency said. But commentators quickly called for extensive safety reviews after the sprinkler system malfunctioned during Monday's fire.

The tragedy also is likely to push authorities across the Gulf to further examine fire safety rules in a region where the drive to build fast and big has brought concerns about the level of emergency planning.

Rescue crews in?Qatar's?capital Doha had to hack through the roof of the mammoth Villaggio mall to reach the child care facility, where the victims included 2-year-old New Zealand triplets and three Spanish siblings. Two firefighters also were killed.

"What happened is similar to murder because of the lack of safety measures in such complexes," said wrote Saleh al-Kuwari, editor of the Al Raya newspaper in Doha.

An editorial in the newspaper Al Arab urged officials around the Gulf to consider creating special firefighting and civil defense units for the energy-rich region's huge malls. The Villaggio includes an ice skating rink, theme park, movie theater and indoor Venice-style gondola rides.

"Safety requirements must be stressed," said the editorial. "They also need regular review."

Qatar's?Interior Ministry said the mall's sprinkler system malfunctioned, and rescue efforts were hampered by a lack of floor plans. Other Gulf nations also have confronted concerns about whether public safety planning can keep pace with the rapid construction.

In November, firefighters in Sharjah, north of Dubai, struggled to battle a blaze in a 25-story tower without equipment to reach the flames. The United Arab Emirates is considering bans on flammable panels in high-rise buildings after more recent back-to-back tower fires.

An Al Arab journalist, Marzouki Faisal, reported that the route to the Villaggio daycare center wound through a "maze" of narrow halls and stairways. He and others questioned the rules that allow childcare sites inside commercial buildings.

"What happened is murder as a result of negligence and idleness," he wrote.

The full list of those killed has not been issued by?Qatar?officials, but most of the nationalities are known from statements by various countries and families. The young victims include a 3-year-old French child, four Spanish children, an 18-month-old South African toddler and the New Zealand triplets, Lillie, Jackson and Willsher Weekes.

"It's absolutely devastating," the triplets' grandmother, Jo Turner, told Fairfax Media in New Zealand.

Spain's El Pais newspaper said the Spanish children killed included three siblings, aged 2 to 7, and a 7-year-old girl from another family. Another newspaper, El Mundo, said the Spanish mothers dropped off their children while they shopped.

Tennis star Rafael Nadal was among those expressing their condolences via Twitter to the "families and friends" of the victims. The world No. 2 has appeared in a number of tournaments in the Gulf state.

At least three of the nursery teachers, women from the Philippines, died of smoke inhalation, Philippine Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said in Manila. A South African woman who worked at the center also died, said a South African government statement.

The Villaggio opened in 2006 and is one of?Qatar's?most popular shopping and amusement destinations in fast-growing?Qatar, which will host football's 2022 World Cup.

More than three-quarters of?Qatar's?population of 1.8 million residents are foreigners attracted to the tiny nation for jobs ranging from laborers to government advisers.

Sheik Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani, the minister of state for interior affairs, said authorities have carried out repeated search operations in the mall and confirmed that no one is still trapped inside, according to comments posted on the ministry's website.

Qatar's?Interior Ministry said Tuesday that civil defense crews contained two "limited" fires at a school and theQatar?Aeronautics College. It said there were no casualties in either fire.

Funeral services for victims of the Villaggio fire were expected later Tuesday, it added.

New stem cell technique promises abundance of key heart cells

ScienceDaily (May 28, 2012) ? Cardiomyocytes, the workhorse cells that make up the beating heart, can now be made cheaply and abundantly in the laboratory.

Writing this week (May 28, 2012) in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team of Wisconsin scientists describes a way to transform human stem cells -- both embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells -- into the critical heart muscle cells by simple manipulation of one key developmental pathway. The technique promises a uniform, inexpensive and far more efficient alternative to the complex bath of serum or growth factors now used to nudge blank slate stem cells to become specialized heart cells.

"Our protocol is more efficient and robust," explains Sean Palecek, the senior author of the new report and a University of Wisconsin-Madison professor of chemical and biological engineering. "We have been able to reliably generate greater than 80 percent cardiomyocytes in the final population while other methods produce about 30 percent cardiomyocytes with high batch-to-batch variability."

The ability to make the key heart cells in abundance and in a precisely defined way is important because it shows the potential to make the production of large, uniform batches of cardiomyocytes routine, according to Palecek. The cells are in great demand for research, and increasingly for the high throughput screens used by the pharmaceutical industry to test drugs and potential drugs for toxic effects.

The capacity to make the heart cells using induced pluripotent stem cells, which can come from adult patients with diseased hearts, means scientists will be able to more readily model those diseases in the laboratory. Such cells contain the genetic profile of the patient, and so can be used to recreate the disease in the lab dish for study. Cardiomyocytes are difficult or impossible to obtain directly from the hearts of patients and, when obtained, survive only briefly in the lab.

Scientists also have high hopes that one day healthy lab-grown heart cells can be used to replace the cardiomyocytes that die as a result of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

"Many forms of heart disease are due to the loss or death of functioning cardiomyocytes, so strategies to replace heart cells in the diseased heart continue to be of interest," notes Timothy Kamp, another senior author of the new PNAS report and a professor of cardiology in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. "For example, in a large heart attack up to 1 billion cardiomyocytes die. The heart has a limited ability to repair itself, so being able to supply large numbers of potentially patient-matched cardiomyocytes could help."

"These cells will have many applications," says Xiaojun Lian, a UW-Madison graduate student and the lead author of the new study. The beating cells made using the technique he devised have, so far, been maintained in culture in the lab for six months and remain as viable and stable as the day they were created.

Lian and his colleagues found that manipulating a major signaling pathway known as Wnt -- turning it on and off at prescribed points in time using just two off-the-shelf small molecule chemicals -- is enough to efficiently direct stem cell differentiation to cardiomyocytes.

"The fact that turning on and then off one master signaling pathway in the cells can orchestrate the complex developmental dance completely is a remarkable finding as there are many other signaling pathways and molecules involved," says Kamp.

"The biggest advantage of our method is that it uses small molecule chemicals to regulate biological signals," says Palecek. "It is completely defined, and therefore more reproducible. And the small molecules are much less expensive than protein growth factors."

Also contributing to the Wisconsin study, which was supported by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, were Cheston Hsiao, Gisela Wilson, Kexian Zhu, Laurie Hazeltine, Samira M. Azarin, Kunil K. Raval and Jianhua Zhang, all of UW-Madison.

Hm this has a nice little storyline, not much description but hey, good enough. I might join however I need to find a pokemon that I wouldn't mind roleplaying as. I say this because of the fact that The types of pokemon up to play are...well pokemon I just down right dislike, the only one I would like playing as would be Gengar, Golurk, and Nidoking, things in that evolution line.

EDIT: Are the good pokemon the pokemon that are not ice, dark, poison ect? I ask because I would like to reserve a big part.

Steve Jobs Would Have ?Lost His Mind? Over Siri, Former Employee Says

Siri?s had a rough ride since its launch with the iPhone 4S in October.

When the phone launched, the 4S was universally deemed the best iPhone yet, and Siri one of its shining features. Hackers even jumped on the chance to bend Siri to their will. But since then, Siri excitement has waned, and disappointed fans have taken to the courts to vent their spleen against her creator.

And now it looks like Apple employees are also upset that Siri hasn?t yet matured into the digital assistant of our dreams. ?People are embarrassed by Siri,? a former Apple employee told Fortune. ?Steve would have lost his mind over Siri.?

How Jobs would have reacted to Siri complaints and its evolution, only those closest to the former Apple CEO could know. But is the general anti-Siri sentiment justified?

?Siri is a useful service if you form your queries correctly and understand what the service can do. But many people expect Siri to be more robust than it is,? Gartner analyst Brian Blau told Wired via e-mail. ?So for these types of voice services, there really needs to be some education on the part of the consumer.?

But if the consumer?s education is limited to the star-studded Siri advertisements they see on TV, their disappointment may be deserved. Case in point: A number of people hit Apple with class-action lawsuit that argues Siri doesn?t actually perform like it does in Apple TV spots. ?Many times advertisements are aspirational and their goal is to lead to customer engagement,? Blau said. ?But maybe Apple missed the mark with this one.?

Apple lawyers have since filed to dismiss the suit, saying the plaintiffs? complaints were incomplete, vague, and ?highly individualized.?

Also, it?s important to note that Siri is still a beta product, ?so clearly there?s going to be some user experiences that differ,? Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg told Wired via email.

Nonetheless, Siri has been around for well over six months now, and we haven?t seen any major updates to either its performance or capabilities. For a product in beta, you?d expect at least occasional tweaks and additions. And Siri didn?t even make it onto the third-generation iPad (but there are plenty of good reasons why it would be challenging or impractical to bring the feature to non-phone devices).

Blau and Gartenberg both expect Apple to continue to improve Siri through future updates, as Apple seems very committed to the feature. But will we not see any improvements until iOS 6? ?I think Apple is holding off for iOS 6,? web developer and Siri hacker Pete Lamonica told Wired. ?They?re not really the type to introduce new functionality between major OS releases, even when they could (like with Siri).?

Competitors like Samsung are starting to emulate Apple?s voice-powered assistant, and if Apple doesn?t push out some killer updates soon, Siri could lose its sparkle.

I don?t know if Jobs would have ?lost his mind? over Siri, but I can?t imagine he?d be peachy with the state she?s in now.

Exactly a week ago, my very good friend and I wanted to hang out for happy hour.
We decided to go somewhere we've never been to, but was close to where we lived.
Both craving for some good comfort food and some adult beverages after a long work week,
we ended up going to a Columbian/Spanish Restaurant called Saoco
[means "something outstanding" or it could also mean a specific beverage].
My friend and I were so happy that we went to this "new to us" restaurant. ?We were both so pleased with the food, the drinks, dessert, atmosphere, and service. ?When everything is excellent, the whole experience makes it more memorable! ?It also means that we order one more extra drink.

The empanadas were yummy and crispy filled with potatoes and spicy beef. ?It was served with spicy hot sauce, which I could really drink because it was THAT good.

The platter of chicaron, platano, and arepa were good too with the spicy sauce. ?This is not for the faint of heart or for those counting calories because chicharon is practically a thick slab of bacon fried. ?Not something I eat all the time, but I do enjoy it when I do. ?No judging folks!

My friend and I ordered garlic chicken and shrimp. ?Super flavorful and delicious. ?Served with beans and white rice. ?Have to have both when eating Spanish food!

We ordered passion fruit and mango mojitos. ?It was TOO GOOD. ?We had one of each.
Tres leches. ?If you don't know what it is, look it up. ?You'll want one ASAP!

My friend and I pretty much stayed at the restaurant for a few hours. ?We lost track chatting but most of all enjoying our experience at Saoco. ?We plan on going back to try the other dishes in the menu and we already can't wait!

Since this weekend is a long weekend, I plan on relaxing and enjoying the extra day off.

"If this comes out anywhere near ? forget $100 billion ? if this comes out at $75 billion, how much upside is there?" Barry Ritholtz, chief executive of stock-research firm FusionIQ, asks on a Bloomberg TV interview the following day. "You know, you look at Google, which generates about $30 per user in total revenue.?Facebook?is in the $2 to $4 range."

The company will eventually price itself at $104 billion, the first time a company has valued itself at more than $100 billion at its IPO, aiming to raise $16 billion.

Senate committee cuts Pakistan aid over conviction

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Senate panel expressed its outrage Thursday over Pakistan's conviction of a doctor who helped the United States track down Osama bin Laden, voting to cut aid to Islamabad by $33 million ? $1 million for every year of the physician's 33-year sentence for high treason.

The punitive move came on top of deep reductions the Appropriations Committee already had made to President Barack Obama's budget request for Pakistan, a reflection of the growing congressional anger over its cooperation in combatting terrorism. The overall foreign aid budget for next year had slashed more than half of the proposed assistance and threatened further reductions if Islamabad failed to open overland supply routes to U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Pushing aside any diplomatic talk, Republicans and Democrats criticized Pakistan a day after the conviction in Pakistan of Shakil Afridi. The doctor ran a vaccination program for the CIA to collect DNA and verify bin Laden's presence at the compound in Abbottabad where U.S. commandos found and killed the al-Qaida leader in May 2011.

"We need Pakistan, Pakistan needs us, but we don't need Pakistan double-dealing and not seeing the justice in bringing Osama bin Laden to an end," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who pushed for the additional cut in aid.

He called Pakistan "a schizophrenic ally," helping the United States at one turn, but then aiding the Haqqani network which has claimed responsibility for several attacks on Americans. The group also has ties to al-Qaida and the Taliban.

"It's Alice in Wonderland at best," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. "If this is cooperation, I'd hate like hell to see opposition."

One of the most forceful statements came from Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who also serves as the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. She pointed out that Pakistan has suffered at the hands of terrorists yet misconstrued what is treason in convicting Afridi. She also insisted that Afridi was not a spy.

"This conviction says to me that al-Qaida is viewed by the court to be Pakistan," said Feinstein, who said it made her rethink U.S. assistance.

The Appropriations Committee approved Graham's amendment to cut the assistance by $33 million on a 30-0 vote. The full Senate will vote on the overall bill, possibly this summer.

At the State Department, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the United States believes Afridi should be released.

"His help was instrumental in taking down one of the world's most notorious murderers that was clearly in Pakistan's interest as well as ours and the rest of the world," Clinton told reporters, adding that the United States will continue to press the issue with Islamabad.

In crafting the overall legislation, the committee reduced Obama's request to aid Pakistan by 58 percent as resentment and doubts linger on Capitol Hill a year after bin Laden was killed deep inside Pakistan. Tensions between Washington and Islamabad have increased as Pakistan closed overland supply routes to Afghanistan after a U.S. attack on the Pakistani side of the border killed 24 Pakistani soldiers in November.

The United States and Pakistan failed to resolve the issue at the recent NATO summit in Chicago.

The congressional anger over the conviction and the supply routes extended to the Senate Armed Services Committee, which completed a $631.4 billion defense budget Thursday. The panel added a provision stipulating that before Pakistan can be reimbursed with coalition funds, the secretary of defense must certify that Pakistan is opening and maintaining the supply routes, is not supporting the Haqqani network, and not detaining or imprisoning Pakistani citizens, according to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

He referred to the conviction as a virtual death sentence.

The fierce congressional response in various committees "shows a common outrage," Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., told reporters.

Members of the Senate Appropriations Committee also complained about mafia-style extortion by Pakistan in seeking truck fees in exchange for opening the supply lines. The cost had been $250 per truck prior to the attack. Pakistan is now demanding $5,000 per truck. The United States has countered at $500.

The bill would provide just under $1 billion in aid to Pakistan, including $184 million for State Department operations and $800 million for foreign assistance. Counterinsurgency money for Pakistan would be limited to $50 million.

The legislation also conditions the counterinsurgency aid on Pakistan reopening the supply routes.

Islamabad won't get any of the funds for counterinsurgency or money in prior legislation unless the secretary of state certifies to the Appropriations committees that "the government of Pakistan has reopened overland cargo routes available to support United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops in Afghanistan, and funds appropriated under this heading can be used efficiently and effectively by the end of the fiscal year," the legislation says

If the secretary can't certify to Congress, the money would be transferred to other accounts.

The overall legislation would fund the State Department, foreign operations and other programs at $52.1 billion, which is $2.6 billion less than what Obama requested for the 2013 fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 and $1.2 billion below current spending.

Wading into the dispute over Palestinian refugees, the panel approved a version of an amendment from Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., that would require the secretary of state to submit a report to Congress on the number of Palestine refugees who were displaced by the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict, the number of descendants and who receives assistance from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency.

The issue of whether to count refugees and their descendants is a divisive one. Some 5 million Palestine refugees receive assistance from the U.N. agency. A third of registered refugees live in camps in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The State Department and Jordan opposed the original Kirk amendment and it was modified by Leahy.
