One of the most common fantasies of the average person is that of being famous. Girls and boys around the world have dreamed of being famous actors or musicians, with droves of screaming fans and admirers. Classically, the primary methods of achieving these dreams was to beat long odds and gain the notice of either a movie or music professional and secure a contract. Even if this goal was achieved, the chances of becoming the next big sensation were slim at best.
However, with the internet?s skill in pervading virtually every aspect of modern life, this dream has, in a way, shifted towards something a little more achievable. While becoming a superstar is still immensely difficult and highly improbable, smaller levels of notoriety are now in reach of virtually any person with a will, some basic tech equipment and an internet connection. The internet allows for virtually anyone to reach an audience of potentially millions, without the necessity for a professional agent or publicist to promote them. One of the most common ways to achieve this goal is podcasting.
Podcasting is defined by Wikipedia as ?a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio, video, PDF, or ePub files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device.? In essence, this means that a person with some basic audio and/or video equipment, a computer and the capacity to upload content to digital storage can make their own ongoing audio or video series, and prospective audience members can download and watch them on a regular basis. The name ?podcast? comes from a combination of iPod and broadcasting.
Podcasting and Education
Aside from the afore mentioned example of the individual aspiring to have their own personal content reach a large audience, there are many other capacities that podcasting has proven to be an asset. One of the most common uses of podcasting beyond entertainment is in education. Many modern classrooms, from kindergarten on up to the 12th grade, have discovered that podcasting provides an exceptional method for teachers to instruct students in virtually any area without the necessity of being present. In addition, the fact that a podcast can be downloaded and listened to at the student?s own pace, the time constraints present in the classroom disappear. In many cases, a podcast of the classroom session itself is recorded, which allows a student to replay any part that they were unable to fully grasp during the original lecture.
Podcasting is not only used in K-12 classrooms, it is also used as a helpful supplement in many institutes of higher learning. Language learning and tutorials are two of the most common areas that have found podcasting to be a promising tool in helping college students excel in chosen courses.

As print media becomes more and more obsolete, many newspapers are using podcasting to provide an alternative to simply being able to read their products. Users can download summaries of news topics, which is designed to promote their individual brand, as well as drive traffic to their online content. In 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle was the first newspaper to offer a podcast that was generated from a completely separate website.

Since technology itself provides the basis for podcasting in general, it stands to reason that it would be one of the most popular topics that utilize this medium. Many tech professionals have developed excellent podcasts that provide information on a wide variety of tech topics.
