Getty ImagesThis year, the fines imposed by the NFL against players who have done things on the field they arguably shouldn?t have done have taken on a bizarre level of specificity.
The specificity comes not on a case-by-case basis, but from the agreement reached by the league and the NFLPA regarding the minimum amounts for various infractions.
For physical contact with an official, for example, the minimum player fine is $26,250 on a first offense. Verbal or non-physical offenses against officials entail a less specific $21,000 fine for a first offense.
For striking, kicking, or kneeing an opponent, the minimum for a first offense is $7,875.
Horse collar, first offense?? $15,750 minimum.
Face mask, late hit, low block, chop block, taunting?? $7,875 minimum.
Leg whip, roughing the passer?? $15,750 minimum.
Spearing, hit on defenseless player, blindside block, impermissible helmet use?? $21,000 minimum.
Fighting?? $26,250 minimum.
Excessive profanity or other unsportsmanlike conduct triggers a minimum fine of $10,500.
Foreign substances on the uniform/body or failure to wear a chin strap results in a minimum fine of $7,875.
Throwing a football into the stands or personal messages on the uniform draw a minimum fine of $5,250.
For second offenses, all minimum fines double.
Remember, these are minimum fines.? The league office can go higher, if it chooses.
The fines for on-field misconduct between players are subject to appeal to Ted Cottrell or Art Shell, former coaches who have been jointly appointed and who are jointly paid by the NFL and the NFLPA.? And while the initial fines are disclosed by the league on request, announcements regarding reductions rarely if ever are made.
Some believe that the fines should be based on a percentage of player salary or cap number.?? Until that happens (and it possibly never will), specific amounts negotiated by the NFL and the NFLPA will apply to all players, regardless of how much or how little they make.

This year's Apple TV offers full 1080p making the viewing experience even better. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't use our Apple TV whether it's to stream music, access purchased movies, rent content, browse YouTube, or stream our favorite shows on Netflix and Hulu. At only $99, it's a no brainer if you've got a friend or relative that already utilizes other Apple products in their home. It'll make the perfect add-on companion and they'll love you for it.
I've never been a fan of battery cases since they add so much bulk. Other solutions like the Mophie Powerstation not only give you a portable way to charge your iPhone (or any smartphone for that matter), but other devices as well. Since the input is simply USB, you can use your existing cables and charge whatever you'd like. Share it with friends, and pass it around.

I've never been a huge fan of the Android platform and the first few iterations of Windows Phone didn't really pique my interest but I've always been a fan of Nokia hardware back to the N95. It is still one of my favorite phones I've ever owned to date. It was amazing for its time.
Windows Phone has come a long way in my opinion and Nokia makes some of the best hardware and mobile cameras in the industry and the Nokia Lumia 920 is no exception. Everything from the screen to the camera to wireless charging makes it one of the best Windows Phone offerings to date.
While I have no intention of giving up my iPhone 5, there are people out there that don't want Apple products in their ecosystem. If you've got someone in your life that's really hoping for a new phone this holiday season but they don't want an iPhone, I'm positive they'd be glad to receive a Lumia 920. You can pick one up unlocked and contract free for $599 or on contract with AT&T for as little as $99.

This happens even though modern life has made doing many things much easier than it was in the past we have not increased the amount of time we spend relaxing. Instead usually we try to have more interests and try to fit even more activity in our every day lives. And so when we are on the road getting from one place to another, instead of enjoying the beautiful countryside that we pass through we are focused on getting to the destination and the things that would follow.
But ask a wise person and you will know that the journey is an important as getting there. And a great way to enjoy a road journey is in a limo when you do not have to drive yourself. Driven to Write

Instead of laughter, there ensued a serious discussion about how hard it is to make a living as an artist. No argument there, but what made me pause was: ?What you really need is a full time job.?
I felt my ears burning. ?Wait! So what do you think I?m doing?? I screamed in my head.
What I said in an even voice was, ?Not necessary. That?s okay.?
I continued with, ?There are artists, writers specifically, who are doing their thing quite successfully.?
My niece countered, ?But aren?t a lot of them doing other things to make money??
?Yes, but that?s by choice; they don?t have to.?
Hmmm?
Then after a bit more time defending my case, I realized I shouldn?t really blame her. You see, like many looking on, her vision is too narrow. Besides, I was not the best example of ?success? ? if you measured it in dollars and cents, that is.
But then again, what is life without balance? Do I always write with $$ as the goal? Most emphatically not. Do I want the frenetic soul wrenching burden of being yoked to someone else?s schedule and whims as an employee? Or even doing something day after day for which I have no passion? (Please understand that not only do I have great respect for people that do this, there were times I had to do it myself. It takes tremendous fortitude.) Been there, done that and posed by the life-sized cutout character.
However, I must confess many times instead of producing regularly and being much more organized, I coast. (or get lost in a game or catch up on Facebook or watch a movie or take a nap or read). Inconsistency will not yield the money that I could be making. So, I made a renewed commitment to earn more income from my writing. After my pledge, I made a list of areas ? some which I?ve started on already ? that are sure to expand my writing:
After reviewing my list, I realized that with steady work, my dream of being driven in air conditioned comfort while I tapped away furiously on a tablet in the back seat, could happen.
No, scratch that. When it does, my niece will be among the first to whom I?ll offer a ride.

PAULSBORO, N.J. (AP) ? Homes have been evacuated anew near the spot in southern New Jersey where a train derailed, releasing a hazardous chemical into the air and sickening dozens of people.
National Transportation Safety Board chairman Deborah Hersman said Friday night that there were evacuations in Paulsboro because of increased levels of chemicals.
Around 7 a.m., seven train cars derailed on a bridge. One tanker car was sliced open, releasing vinyl chloride. Hours later, officials gave the all-clear for residents near the site to return but warned that there could be more complications.
A 12-block radius was evacuated on Friday evening. U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Drew Madjeska tells The Philadelphia Inquirer that residents might not be allowed back for several days.

There is no denying that we live in a ski town. Many employers offer powder days along with sick days, and a free bus runs from town up to Bridger Bowl. So, when I moved to Bozeman from out-of-state, people often assumed it was because I was in search of fresher powder. Welcoming Bozemanites would pepper me with questions about my skiing habits, and their jaws would hit the floor when I explained I didn?t have any. ?Well, what do you do?? they often asked.
I tried skiing a few times, on a small, icy knoll in southern Michigan. On my third attempt, I swore off the sport forever. It was eighth grade and I was warming up on the bunny hill. The rope tow lurched to a stop halfway up the slope. When it restarted, it jerked my noodle arms almost out of their sockets and I landed flat on my face. The back ends of my skis met one another so that one ski pointed due East, while the other pointed due West. There was no way to roll over, no way to get on my knees, no way to get up at all without help. Icy Michigan snow scraped against my cheeks, and I was stuck, along with everyone else on the rope tow. I could feel their expectant eyes waiting for my next move. Someone?s dad finally took pity on me and picked me up. I snowplowed down that bunny hill and never looked back.
So, how do I enjoy the long, cold winters in our quaint ski town? Do I curse the snow, kick my snowblower a few times, and retreat indoors to the warmth of a cozy quilt and good book? Sometimes. But, in truth, I would rather be outside, and I have found endless ways to enjoy the snow without strapping on a pair of downhill skis.
If you are feeling adventurous, there are a number of great opportunities to take a ?stay-cation.? This is what I like to call the opportunity to get out of town and have an adventure, without having to spend the night anywhere. In just 45 minutes, you can get from Bozeman to Emigrant, in the Paradise Valley. There you can jump on a dogsled with Yellowstone Dog Sled Adventures and see the mountains in a way you have never experienced before. The dogs whisk sleds silently through the mountains, and the joy they clearly feel while running is contagious. The website www.yellowstonedogsledadventures.com is a great place to look for more information.
Dogs aren?t the only creatures willing to pull you around in a sled, either. Many places, like the 320 Guest Ranch, offer horse-drawn sleigh rides. Bring the kids. There are plenty of warm, woolen blankets to go around, and the Ranch?s beautiful draft horses won?t mind the extra weight. Sleigh rides last an hour, and involve a stop at the Mountain Man campsite where fires both inside and outside of the tent will keep you warm while you munch on appetizers or dessert and have a warm drink.
If you are interested in spending one night away, Beartooth Powder Guides recently finished construction of a backcountry cabin just south of Cooke City. A two-mile hike on snowshoes will take you to a fully equipped cabin that sleeps up to 10 people. You can reserve the entire cabin, or pay a per person rate and take your chances on potential roommates. Talk about adventure! Beartooth Powder Guides? website, www.beartoothpowder.com, can answer all of your questions. The National Forest Service also has a number of rustic cabins that can be reached by snowshoe, cross-country skis, or snowmobile during the winter. They make a great, and inexpensive, ?stay-cation.? Visiting www.recreation.gov allows you to search all the options based on distance from your home.
If you only have an hour or two, and would like to stay closer to home, Bozeman offers a number of things to do. The city of Bozeman builds and maintains three ice rinks, at Beall Park, South Side Park, and Bogert Park. The rinks usually open around the end of December, although it depends on the weather. The Bozeman Recreation Department offers skating lessons at South Side Park for all ability levels. Bogert Park and a rink at South Side Park are often used for pickup hockey games, especially on weekend nights. The rinks are open and lit until 10p.m. every night, so there is plenty of opportunity to glide around under the stars after work. If a light snow is falling, it feels magical. In fact, little neighborhood ice rinks are scattered throughout the county. Try to see how many you can find.
Sledding is another fun way to spend some time outside in the snow, and in Bozeman, we have no shortage of hills. Peet?s Hill in Burke Park is one of the city?s most popular sledding spots. Locals have been zipping down this hill for generations. Another favorite sledding spot is a large hill adjacent to the Dinosaur Playground at the Gallatin County Regional Park on the corner of Oak St. and Davis Ln., just west of 19th Street.
Snowshoeing is my favorite way to spend a winter Saturday. Any trail you love to hike in the summer will be fun to traverse on snowshoes in the winter. Northern Lights Trading Co. and Round House Sports rent snowshoes for $10 per day and $12 per day respectively. Inexpensive winter recreational gear, like snowshoes and ice skates, can also be found at Play It Again Sports. As always, if you are venturing into the mountains, be sure to let someone know where you are going, bring snacks and extra water, and check the avalanche report at www.mtavalanche.com.
Someday I may decide to try downhill skiing again. After all, a woman is allowed to change her mind. But, there are so many other fun things to do, that I might not have the time.
